JULIAN
CORYELL
Since childhood, Julian has been playing music.Be it singing and
playing bass or guitar with his legendary father jazz pioneer Larry
Coryell, touring on a variety of instruments with everyone from
Carole King to Jewel to Aimee Mann, producing and orchestrating tracks for
other up and coming artists like Jim Boggia and the critically acclaimed
Webb Brothers, or writing, producing and playing his own music.
No longer confined by the rules and regulations of a major record
label, Julian and co-producer/engineer Joe Zook (who has worked
with everyone from Liz Phair to Tricky) made an auspicious mark in the
musical community with his most recent cd, "Rock Star".
Featuring Julian on Virtually every instrument and recorded completely
in his home studio, this latest body of work showcases his extraordinary
talent and something that has been missing from music at large -
depth of content surrounded by irresistible sounds.
"Rock Star" proudly wears its eclectic influences
on its ambitious sleeves. From the title track (which whimsically
evokes the spirit of early Queen) to "You are not Glass"
(which sounds not unlike something Simon and Garfunkel might have
written if they were Gen-Xers) to the Brian Wilson/Ram era Paul
McCartney inspired "Day Off" , its clear that "Rock
Star" revels in the past, present, and future of original music.
Praise for Rockstar
And what an album it is. Born with the same visceral affection as Jeff Buckley and the
sixth sense of pop mastery ala Jason Falkner, Coryells moody take on polished
California pop is like an aural orgasm. Tidal waves of ingenius vocal harmonies,
cynically sweet lyrics, and enough spiraling chord changes to cause vertigo shroud
Rock Star in shimmering talent, the kind you just dont witness anymore.
There is soul in his voice, intelligence in his arrangements.
If theres any justice in this world, Rock Star will make Julian Coryell
into just that.
(Tim Den-Transform)
With his uncanny ability to craft strong melodies, rich arrangements, and clever lyrics, Coryell has already proved to be a major talent. This is a MUST for fans of Jellyfish,
Michael Penn and Jon Brion. This guy can write some seriously beautiful, rich,
warm and high-brow pop, its like a doctorate in songwriting.

On Rock Star, Coryell is able to balance his use of studio nuance with straight-ahead
attitude. His instrumental and lyrical playfulness build upon each other blending and
complementing themselves into his jazz-tinged rock and roll songs. The sheer versatility and straightforwardness in Coryells music is evidence of a musician who has
traveled a long, uncompromised road towards contentment.

Julian continues to broaden his horizons by not only creating new material for himself
(hes currently working on two new cds slated for a fall release), but by
co-writing, producing and playing for others as well.
This last year saw him playing on records for pop priestess Linda Perry as well as
pop/soul sensation Marc Brousard, whos "Carencro" cd is currently climbing
the charts.
Hes also featured on Aimee Manns new release "The Forgotten Arm".
"I love working with other artists almost as much as doing
my own thing. It allows me to express a completely different side
of myself and come back to my own music with a fresh point of view".
Julian's music may invoke your past like a photograph, it might
make you long for something you didn't know you wanted, it may even
move you like a roller coaster ride, but at the very least it will
captivate you with it's wit, wisdom and creativity.
